The Ability Within the Disability
Daniel has always shown evidence of a photographic memory. It started very early at around 2-1/2 years old. Before he could speak he would use magnetic letters on the floor to spell out words he had seen in his environment. It got to a point where I was buying buckets of these plastic letters to keep up with the demand for his expanding repertoire of billboard style creations.
The cool thing is that because he had the ability to take snapshots in his head of pictures and words I could pair the two together on cards as a way to communicate with him and he with me. The words would have little to no meaning if there were not visuals to give them one so pictures were imperative..
I bought a digital camera and took pictures of the foods he liked and typed the word below the picture. Then I laminated the pictures and applied velcro to the back to attach them to the refrigerator. If Daniel wanted a preferred food I would hand him the card and physically prompt his hand to give me the card while immediately rewarding the exchange with the desired food. He caught on right away so I continued to take pictures of all of his toys and placed them out of his reach so that he would have to communicate with me to get what he wanted or needed.
Since those early days we have been able to simply write simple sentences on a dry erase board if we need to convey a message and he is not able to take in audible communications for whatever reason. I would love to see him do the same someday by writing his own thoughts down or typing on a computer but to date he has yet to show us he has any desire to do so although we know he can use a keyboard and write legibly.
LOGOS He watches the beginning and end credits on DVD's and then draws the logo from memory.
I think he googled "Bridges" at school.
I love that his Occupational Therapist for years tried to get Daniel to grasp his writing instruments in the "proper" manner. It does not seem to have hindered his ability.
Today I look at his capability to take these mind snapshots and recreate images in his drawing as a possible way for him to evolve this skill into a career. If not his own original artwork on canvas maybe painting window displays for Christmas or for that Going Out of Business Sale. At this stage of the game he wants to draw what he wants to draw and would not take direction very well. That is a "skill" we may have to work on. :)

That is really awesome.
Wow the velcro pictures were a great idea! He's quite an artist!
My friends son is an artist as well. He has Aspergers (sp?) and it has helped him to overcome the lack of social skills often associated with it. Daniel's drawings are amazing and I think you are onto something. There is always an ability within the disability if someone takes the time to look. Great job, mom.
@MsKittyCatty@xanga - There was a more formal method but we are talking $ Thousands for a program. Before I had the digital camera I used a picture of burlap I found on google images and cut it into a rectangle shape to mimic the look of a graham cracker. I had to get really creative to make this work. The camera was well worth it. Most of the time he draws on dry erase now and it makes me crazy because I can't save any of it but he likes this method because he can correct erros easily. I managed to get the bridge picture but he wasn't done yet. Then when I wanted a picture of the finished work he erased it. He doesn't even want me around when he's drawing. He sais "Mommy to go" The two logo pics were dug out of the trash after he went to bed. ha
@gwacemom@momaroo - Thanks!! I remember reading a book by Temple Grandin who is a professor now but she is autistic. She wrote that schools need to find something that these kids are good at early on and capitalize on that skill. I totally agree that they should drop the math and history and tap into what will most benefit them in a practical sense.
@P1AutismMom - Yikes that's a lot for a formal method.... I'm glad you were able to snap a pic of the bridge before he erased it!!
@AlterEgo909@xanga - Thanks!! it's very interesting. Sometimes Dan will not draw for months and then he goes on a binge. I'm so grateful that he can use his memory to help him communicate. We hope he can expand on this a lot in the future.
@MsKittyCatty@xanga - He used to draw with chalk on our decking outside. BIG pictures. I would get up on a step ladder to take a snapshot before it got rained on or messed up by our dogs paw prints. ha ha
@AlterEgo909@xanga - Oh WOW, Thank you for the recommendation. That is very kind of you :)
That is so freakin' cool. Daniel does with drawings and pictures what Joshua does with words and quotes. Josh can recite nearly entire movies from memory after seeing them once. Eventually, I caught on that certain quotes meant things other than just what was being quoted... and Josh and I developed a language of our own of sorts. Since his was "verbal" it has been a semi-easy conversion to "real" conversation... but the visual conversations you have with Daniel are very cool. I think you've done an amazing job of learning Daniel's language. Keep developing it. You guys just might find the keys to helping other kids like Daniel unlock their communication skills.
@keystspf@xanga - It just shows us that our kids have the desire to communicate we just need to find a way for them to do it effectively.
whoa! he is going to be an amazing talent
I'd hang those on my wall.
He is a terrific artist!
His drawings are so intricate~ so must be the workings of his mind. So amazing!
@dingus6@xanga - Thanks, That's a really cool thing to think may happen some day.:)
@filtered_sunlight@momaroo - Thank You!! I have so many old logo drawings it's rediculous. I really need to organize everything someday. Thos plastic storage containers with lids are very dangerous. LOL
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - Thank you!! I wonder if he knows this. :)
@WildWomanOfTheWest@xanga - If I wasn't so squeamish I would study brain biology. As it is I will just have to observe Daniel and take some notes. ha ha
